not strange really...

I think that note was posted out of frustration:

http://haikudev.blogspot.com/

In any case, the source for the rtl8169 is in Haiku's repo, and can be built for BeOS, Haiku, or Zeta. The rtl8139 driver in Haiku's repo is by a different developer and probably needs more testing/development before it can be considered "mature".

It still seems strange

From this quote by the developer on Bebits:
"I can no longer afford to maintain this driver for Zeta. As yellowTab has got the source (for free), please contact them."
I tried to get the driver from Yellowtab but the nearest one I could find was the RTL8139.
It is not freely available from BeBits at least. After doing an internet search al it would come up with was links to nothing really. I had to get it from Beshare/Javashare. I see how if Yellowtab have got it for free they do not own it, but why can't it be downloaded from Bebits and why does Yellowtab have control unless the the developer himself has been bought by Yellwtab.

two things:

1: the reason the 8139 driver didn't work is because you have an 8169 card. They are not compatible
2: yellowTAB do not own the source of the 8169 driver. Its owned by its original developer, Marcus Overhagen, and it is freely available from the Haiku source tree.

I managed to get a driver that works of Javashare. I am now typing this in Phos b6. It is a shame that it is not more freely available. Can it be updated for other Beos versions, now that Yellowtab own the source?

Did not work work in Phos b6

I tried both the driver download from here and from the Realtek website, Beos driver. In settings in boneyard the settings button was blanked out.
This is the description of the network controller from System Information in Windows XP:
Name [00000008] Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC

Works fine here

Network not working?

I just installed the BeOS 5max after trying on many different machines and am struggling with navigating this OS. I am intrigued with BeOS and have been for a few years just have never been able to "Play" with it. My biggest issue is getting the network to work. I have a Dlink w/Realtek chipset. I downloaded the drivers but to my suprise they appeared to be in place already? what do I do? the system see's it as a NE2000 ISA card.

This special beos driver may just work in win98 perhaps... I am having good luck so far, just doesn't seem to make any particular difference in computer function. Excellent results in web searches and 5 1/4 floppy drive mounting. Nice job, next i will try C64 compatability.

Can we just say this again:

This website, and all the software on it, has NOTHING to do with Windows.

This driver is for the Be Operating System. Right?

If the card works in Windows, so be it. We don't care.

yep .. clarifying .. oldest Rtk is 8019 (not 8129) ain;t no such thang as a Rtk8129 ..

8139 =integrated or pci & 10bT/100bTx, while 8029 is pci and only 10bT or 10b2
 By jdjd - Posted on July 23, 2003 - 21:49:38   (#8292)

8139 Family =integrated into Mbrd or are pci card
and are 10bT/100bTx ("10/100"). When left in default "auto" mode, they talk just fine between slower (10mb/s) and faster(100bTx) nodes.

The older 8029 designation denoted a pci I/F (versus older 8129's ISA I/F ). The 8029 will run at only at 10mbs connecting with ONE OF:
...10baseT ("rj45"/UTP/star topology)
or
...10base2(rg58 "coax"
50ohm-terminated linear bus topology)
Most 8029 NICs had at least the rj45 (looks like an RJ12 phone connector, but has 8 conductors instead of telco2/4/6)
Those which also had the silver metal BNC ("barrel") connector were for coax.
Again, use EITHER I/F, not both.

intel DOS-environment utility program RSET8029.EXE can force IRQ and IoAddr, or allow (factory default) Plug&Pray mode. Note that this type of utility was often tagged/branded by 3rd party implementors to be specific to their (often fronkenschteen-ish) designs.

BeOS has always been happy with 8029's Plug&Play mode, but you DO NOT TELL BIOS/CMOS SETUP to be Plug&Play; you want to turn that CMOS feature OFF.

As mentioned previously, an 8029 (and immed.predecessor 8019) emulated the ne2000 and predecessor NS-DS8390.

For a laugh, developers can go to Don Becker's scyld dev site, and ferret about for his article on using the PROM socket on an 8139 to PROGRAM EEPROMS .. hahaha! For the person who just saved some hundreds of dollars by not having to buy that special PromProg box, send a few quid in to BeBits ! smiles, jd

rtl8029 support is built in BeOS standard distributions since ancient times. No need for special driver d/l.
It appears as ne2000 or ne2k compatible device.
If not, you have problems with shared IRQ-s on your motherboard. Try to resort it.

New Realtek driver

FYI, there is a developer that hangs out on #openbeos on Freenode who is working on an open source realtek 8139 driver. I've tested it for him. Doesn't work with Dano (and probably not Bone, either) yet, and drops *lots* of packets under net_server.

I'm not sure if he wants all sorts of people asking him for the driver, but it couldn't hurt to pop on #openbeos and ask around :-)

Sorry, I sort of misread you too. Yeah, it's a shame the driver is closed source, it would have been great if Be released the source to all their drivers under the GPL or BSD licenses, but I guess yellowTAB inherited all that, so perhaps you can get in contact with then, tell them you are interested in updating/improving their RTL8139 driver.

(BTW, may I ask what computer/motherboard/BIOS brand/model you have? At least in as I would like to avoid purchasing anything in the future that wont let me turn off PnP.)

nono, i mean my bios doesnt have that option

stupid bios splash screens

insaner, although it may not look like you can get into the BIOS on many modern PCs, as they tend to use stupid splash screens instead, you can experiment by pressing ESC, and the various F keys, and other such keys, to see if you finally get to the BIOS screen. There might even be an option to turn the BIOS splash screen OFF. You might also try googling for info about your computer/motherboard model its BIOS and/or bootup process

that was my first move

but, sadly, there is no such option in my bios... :(.. im trying to see what options i can mess with to see if it works.. do you know what exactly it is that disabling that does, to make stuff work? because i might be able to mess in the devices app to get it to work if its just that..

Solution for not working RTL8139 adapter in BeOS
 By forge33 - Posted on May 23, 2003 - 14:34:20   (#7397)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0
Hey all. For some of you your network adaptors may not work in BeOS. I was searching for a solution a while ago and found none so i continued experimenting. My problem was that my raltech RTL8139 adapter wasnt working and even my sound was not working( sblive ). i had the drivers installed and everything but nothing. So finally i rebooted and entered my bios and changed one thing "PNP OS? [YES]" to "PNP OS? [NO]" and it worked( you have to reconfigure network settings in be, and audio should work )
any questions or comments just send me a message

Network card STILL not recognised after update to 5.03 AND installing this driver
 By krimszon - Posted on May 6, 2003 - 06:00:32   (#7194)
Current version when comment was posted: 1.0
So, I have just updated my BeOS Pro to 5.03 AND I have installed this driver following the tips on betips.
Now what? Should my network card be automatically detected on the next start-up? Should it appear on the network preferences drop-down list (along with the NE2000 & 3COM options)? Any help here would be appreciated.
I also installed the NVIDIA driver and after reboot it worked. But this came supplied with an install script. This network driver however, does not. According to betips you should copy the driver to the bin directory and then create a link to it in the dev directory. Now here's what i noticed. The installscript of the NVIDIA driver does this in the /beos tree. After installation the link that was created is broken. Yet the driver works? How can that be? So, I tried copying the appropriate files into the /beos tree and also into the /home tree. Neither have any effect. Manually crating the link file does not help either.

Who can shed some light on the whole driver issue in BeOS? How does it work etc.

Thaaaaanks everyone!

Problems with Realtek drivers

Current version when comment was posted: 1.0
I have problems with Realtek driver. I have a D-Link netcard. It worked great on BeOS, until I deleted these drivers from /boot/home/config/add-ons/...
Then, I reinstalled them, both in /boot/beos/... and in /boot/home, but not in Preferences->Networking there's nothing show, no netcard. I tried to disable/enable PnP from the BIOS, but nothing changed. Could you help me, please?
Thanks a lot
